Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, along with our community partner Read Charlotte, have been working hard to ensure that the children in our community have the best chances to succeed in reading. Through Active Reading workshops for parents, reading resources online and now Active Reading mentor training, our goal of doubling third grade reading outcomes by 2025 is becoming more of a reality.
What is Active Reading?
Active Reading is a different way of reading a children’s book. It involves reading a book WITH a child rather than reading a book TO a child. This proven approach improves children’s language skills, vocabulary and ability to understand what they read on their own.
Sign up for an Active Reading mentor training!
Do you read with a student in kindergarten through third grade as a parent, caregiver, reading buddy or tutor? Or, would you like to? Join the Library for an Active Reading mentor training to learn how to actively read with a child. You will walk away from this 60-minute training session with strategies you can use to support literacy at home or in the community. These research-based practices can improve the shared reading experience between a child and a parent, grandparent or reading buddy.
You will learn…
- the ABCs of Active Reading
- how the ABCs build strong readers
- the skills that children need to be strong readers
- how narrative and nonfiction books help children become strong readers
- how talking about books and stories builds strong readers
You will also be able to…
- engage children in picture walks
- ask open-ended questions while reading picture books
- identify and teach rare vocabulary words
- help children connect to stories and build background knowledge
- engage children in meaningful, purposeful conversation about stories
