Discover the learning moments all around us with Summer Break

We're almost one month into Summer Break 2018!

Did you know that babies, toddlers and preschoolers can join in on Summer Break too? Reading time includes time spent being read to and time spent reading to someone else. This means that parents can log time reading to their child for both parent and child.

This summer, discover the learning moments all around us. Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is here to help you get your child ready to read with simple activities every day.

When you register your child ages 0-3 for Summer Break, the Library will give you a colorful pamphlet filled with ideas for learning activities and lots of great literacy tips. Some of the ideas include:

  • Draw a picture and make up a story about it.
  • Read a book together. Create voices for the characters and use your body to tell the story.
  • Take your child to storytime.
  • Talk about the beginning, middle and end of the story while reading a book.

The Summer Break program is wonderful for all ages! We have activities, book suggestions and programs for babies, children, teens and adults.

Weekly prizes

Each week during Summer Break, the Library will give away three 16GB Kindle Fires with a screen cover and protective case. Prizes will be drawn by age category with one Kindle Fire each for babies/children, teens and adults. Remember that you need to enter either reading time or an activity online each week to be eligible for prize drawings, and you must have a valid library card number or ONE Access account number entered into the library card field of each participant's Summer Break account. Keep an eye on your email account as this is how you will be notified if you win.

Congratulations to the week one winners:

  • Babies/Children: Sophia M. (Mint Hill Library)
  • Teens: Reid W. (Morrison Regional Library)
  • Adults: Danielle C. (Independence Regional Library)
