"Picture books are important because they empower children. Picture books hold the power of language; children learn how words sound together, how to read and how to form context." -Stephen Shaskan, author of A Dog is a Dog
Picture Book Month is an international initiative to encourage everyone to celebrate literacy with picture books during the month of November. It offers us a chance to honor the print picture book in an increasingly digital age.
Here are a few ways you can celebrate this month:
Use your imagination
These wordless picture books and graphic novels offer the youngest of readers a chance to use their imaginations to help tell the story.
Practice your Spanish
Introduce your young learner to a new language, or help your child practice their Spanish speaking skills with these billingual picture books.
Enjoy a good laugh
What could be more enjoyable than laughing along with a child while sharing a book? Check out these funny picture books to share with your whole family.
Visit the Library
Take the family to your favorite local branch to find new picture books to enjoy. Or check out a storytime program offered at many library locations to learn about even more picture books.
Libraries and book lovers around the world will celebrate picture books this month. We hope you join in on the celebration and use this as an opportunity to share your favorite picture book with someone.
Tell us your about your favorite picture book, and how it impacted your love of reading by using #picturebookmonth and tagging @cmlibrary on your favorite social media outlet.
