Most Popular Books of 2016

Most popular books of 2016

It's the end of the year, so let's take a look at which books were the most popular with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library readers in 2016. We pulled circulation data for our adult fiction (both print and digital), adult nonfiction, young adult fiction and juvenile fiction books.

Just as last year, the overall most popular book was a novel.  Rogue Lawyer by John Grisham was the most checked out book, both in hardcover and e-book.

A few things stand out when you look at the lists.

  • Fiction still rules.  Last year the top adult nonfiction book wouldn't have cracked the top ten on the fiction list and the same holds true this year.
  • The print and digital fiction lists only share two titles.
  • There are five holdovers from last years adult nonfiction list. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up went from #1 last year to #2 this year.
  • There are two print fiction books on this year's list from last year.  The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins also fell from #1 to #2.
  • The top two Young Adult novels from last year return as the top two this year.  In fact, four books from last year's list made it to this year's.
  • This was a good year for Rick Riordan.  Six of the top ten young adult titles were written by him.
