Most Popular Books of 2017

As 2017 winds down, let's take a look at which books were the most popular with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library readers this year. We pulled circulation data for our adult fiction (both print and digital), adult nonfiction (combined print and digital), young adult fiction and juvenile fiction books.

Same as last year (and the year before), the overall most popular book was a novel. The Whistler by John Grisham was the book you checked out the most last year, both in hardcover and e-book. This is the second year in a row that John Grisham has had the top book. Last year, his novel The Rogue Lawyer topped the list.

A few things stand out when you look at the lists.

  • Fiction still rules. In the last two years, the top adult nonfiction book wouldn't have cracked the top ten on the fiction list and the trend continues this year.

  • This year the print and digital fiction lists matched up more than last year. Last year the two lists only shared two titles. This year five novels appear on both lists.

  • The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up appears on the nonfiction list for the third year in a row.

  • The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins fell off the list this year after appearing two years in a row.

  • In juvenile fiction, it’s the year of the Wimpy Kid. Books in Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series hold 9 of the top 10 spots on that list.

If you wish, you can compare this year to last year.
