Teen Librarian Recommends: Cosplay and Conventions

PLEASE NOTE: ImagiCon has been moved to Main Library. We hope to see you July 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for ImagiCon at Main Library in Uptown Charlotte.

July is a big month in conventions! With Comic-Con, Supercon, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s very own ImagiCon happening this month, July’s Teen Library Recommends centers around—you guessed it! — Fan conventions. Conventions are a unique, fun, sometimes overwhelming experiences and you can get a taste for the adventure in some of these teen reads:

The Improbable Theory of Ana & Zak has been hailed as the "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist." In it, Ana's little brother Charlie has ditched his school quiz bowl team for a nearby Sci-Fi convention. Ana blames Zak. Zak acts like he doesn’t care about anything, including having been caught cheating, but he feels as lost as Ana’s brother. Ana and Zak might be at odds in the beginning but as they team up to find Charlie amidst the orcs, zombies, and Trekkies, life happens, and they find they have more in common than they first thought.

Conventions may center around the fantastical and the magical, but they can have a magic all their own. For three friends in Queens Of Geek, they’re going to find out how life-changing Cons can be. This diverse book is both a romance and a love letter to all things “fandom.”

Edan Kupferman’s life is a mess plus she’s feeling isolated since her best friend is overseas. The only time she feels like she can handle things is when she’s cosplaying her favorite character. But she can’t escape all the time, and over the course of Don't Cosplay With My Heart, Edan will have to find a way to be her very own hero.

That’s it for this month, but remember that ImagiCon is coming soon! Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 21 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm downtown at ImaginOn. There will be panels, workshops, special guests, gaming, cosplay, prizes, and so much more.
