(UPDATE: we collected 9,865 books that we will distribute to families, children and teens in our community! Thank you for making the inaugural 64U Books for Kids book drive such a success!)
Thank you to everyone who has supported 64U Books for Kids!
Over the past month our customers, WSOC-TV/TV-64 viewers and our community have united to support reading and literacy programs and services at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. The generosity we have seen through the thousands of books collected is inspiring, and will help your Library continue to improve lives and build a stronger community.
Thank you to TV-64 for choosing Charlotte Mecklenburg Library as a partner in this effort.
While our volunteers are still working hard to clean, sort and count the books we have received, some of them are already being placed in the hands of children and teens in our community.
Two weeks ago, the Library, along with the Council for Children's Rights, worked with the Mecklenburg County Courthouse to install a community bookshelf on the 8th floor. More than 160 books collected during the 64U Books for Kids book drive were placed on that shelf. Children and teens can access the materials to read while in the courthouse, and can take the books home without the need to check them out or bring them back.
Donated books will also be distributed over the next year to children and teens in our community through the Library's outreach services, Summer Break Book Bucks, Little Free Libraries, and our partnership with Read Charlotte.
Your donations allow us to provide more books to children and teens in our community. More books in a child's home leads to higher reading scores, better academic performance and results in greater opportunities in life. We appreciate your support in this effort, and hope that the importance of reading and literacy continues to be a topic of conversation in the community.
