Welcome to week three of Summer Break: Read, Learn, Explore! We hope your summer is off to a great start, and you are recording all of the time you have spent reading and learning. Summer Break 2018 runs from June 1 through August 12, 2018.
Looking for reading suggestions?
We all know that reading is important, but did you know that children who do not read over the summer may experience 2-3 months of learning loss by the time school starts back in the fall? Reading is just as important for adults because it keeps adult brains flexible and nimble. Plus, adults who read serve as great role models for kids. That is why the Library recommends 20 minutes of reading per day for everyone - of all ages - all summer long.
We know that it can be hard to come up with a list of great books to read, so library staff are here to help! We have updated our reading lists for kids, teens and adults so you can keep your brains active. Staff at your local library can also help you with book recommendations. Continue reading and remember to enter your reading time online in your Summer Break account.
The Great American Read
If you love books and reading, check out PBS's The Great American Read, an eight-part series and competition that explores the joy of books and the power of reading through the lens of America's 100 best-loved books, as voted on by the public. See if the books you love are on the list, check out the books you haven't read yet and then vote for your favorite at your local library.
Each week during Summer Break, the Library will give away three 16GB Kind Fires with a screen cover and protective case. Prizes will be drawn by age category with one Kindle Fire each for babies/children, teens and adults. Remember that you need to enter either reading time or an activity online each week to be eligible for prize drawings, and you must have a valid library card number or ONE Access account number entered for each participant in the library card field of your Summer Break account. Keep an eye on your email account as this is how you will be notified if you win one of the Kindle Fires.
