Services for Older Adults

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library offers a range of programs and services for older adults. From financial literacy programs to technology classes to book clubs, we have something for everyone. 

Programs & Events

  • Partnership with AARP. Through a partnership with the AARP, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library offers a suite of programming for older adults. These are offered at a variety of our locations all across the county.

  • Book Clubs.  Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has over 40 book clubs! These groups meet at a variety of locations, on a variety of topics. We also have book club kits available for check out.

  • Financial Literacy. We offer many finance programs for all ages. We work with Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) to provide “The Road to Medicare” program regularly at many locations.

  • Genealogy / Local History. Select locations offer 1-on-1 Genealogy sessions to help participants get started with family history research. We also offer a variety of lecture-style history and genealogy programming. The Robinson Spangler North Carolina Room at Main Library is also available to help with genealogy and local history research both in person, over the phone, and online. 

  • 1-on-1 Technology Tutoring. All of our location offer 1-on-1 technology assistance, typically by appointment. Participants can bring a mobile device with them or work on a library computer. We can accommodate most requests—from setting up email accounts to learning how to use a new smart phone.

Our collections

  • Large print collection. We offer a wide variety of large print books which you can find in our catalog. Our helpful staff are also able to help you find titles. 

  • Audiobooks. We have a great collection of audiobooks on CD and Playaways. You can also download eAudiobooks to play on a variety of devices.

Techboomers is a free educational website that teaches older adults and other inexperienced internet users basic computer skills and how to use popular trusted websites.

GCF Learn Free

Interactive essential skills training on topics including Microsoft Office, email, reading, math, and work skills taught through more than 125 tutorials.

HeritageQuest

This collection assembles U.S. federal census, family genealogies, local histories, land and probate records, birth, marriage and death records, and more.

Medline Plus

MedlinePlus brings you information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues in language you can understand.
